The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has rescinded its decision not to participate in the Ghana Music Awards, UK scheduled for London on September 24 this year.
The President of the Union, Alhaji Sidiku Buari, stated this at a news conference in Accra. He said the Union took the decision after a sober reflection and intervention by some Ghanaians both home and abroad.
After the initial objection of MUSIGA to participate in the event, the Union had decided to give the organisers the benefit of doubt for it not to be seen as unduly putting impediments in the way of its members, Alhaji Sidiku Buari said.
He said the Union had decided to collaborate on condition that MUSIGA was represented on the Awards Committee and its views considered in the criteria for honouring the participants.
The MUSIGA President explained that the Union was not against any individual, group or organisation awarding its members, but believed that the right procedures and channel had to be adopted in events such as the Awards.
He explained that in the situation where a similar event was taking place in Ghana, care had to be taken to avoid duplication, overlapping and conflict of interest.
Alhaji Sidiku Buari stated that after scrutinizing the Awards specified and the cut off period, MUSIGA had made some suggestions to the organisers, which it hoped would be factored into the criteria to make it meaningful.
The Vice President of the Union, Diana Akiwumi, said that members of MUSIGA had been exploited for far too long and it was time any Awards involving its members were vetted to ensure that their interest remained paramount.
