Heroes Of Change: Amadu Mohammed, Lila Djaba On This Weekend

The third episode of the MTN Heroes of Change television series goes on air tomorrow, February 8 with stories about Amadu Mohammed and Lila Djaba.

Hosted by Kwami Sefa Kayi, The MTN Heroes of Change is a 13-part television programme that started airing on five stations from Sunday, January 26.

There are people committed to helping their communities in a variety of ways and the proramme, an initiative of the MTN Ghana Foundation, aims to highlight the work of such people and eventually support them financially to execute their projects.

Amadu Mohammed started Achievers Book Club to correct the impression many people have about Muslim (Zongo) communities by facilitating access to education for the youth (especially female) through the provision of scholarships, financial aid and educational materials to those who cannot afford it.

The club also provides guidance and counseling to the youth on the need to avoid deviant behavior. “We've been able to secure scholarships for a number of children and we currently support about 64 children through school,” Mr. Mohammed said.

Lila Macqueen Djaba, a philantropist from Accra has established a school close to a stone quarry to educate the children for no or little fees. By so doing she helps provide education for people who otherwise would not have been able to afford it and helps rescue children from child labour.

“My motivation is my passion and my love for kids and offering them help. For me, education is the only legacy you can leave for your child. Seeing the plight of these kids made me want to start this in the first place.,” she said.

The two personalities are among 20 people selected from across the country to be featured on the MTN Heroes of Change programme which is looking at selfless efforts in five categories: community crusader, social protection, health, environment and education.

A panel of four judges will select winners for each category, as well as an overall winner. An amount of GH¢10,000 will go to support each category winner and the ultimate winner will receive project support of up to GH¢50,000.

The MTN Heroes of Change is shown on Sundays on Crystal TV (7.30 pm); Metro TV (8.00 pm); Multi TV (8.00 pm); eTV Ghana (8.00 pm) and TV Africa (8.30 pm).
