A musical group from Buenaventura, located in the West of Colombia, will on Monday September 23 begin a one-week visit to the country as part of the cultural cooperation between Ghana and Colombia.
Activities lined up for the trip include workshops at the Music Departments of the University of Cape Coast and Ghana (Legon), Jaynii Foundation and performances at Bukom (suburb of Accra) alongside local groups such as Streetwise Kids, Jaynii Troupe, Delali and youthful highlife bands.
A reception in Accra would be hosted by Her Excellency Claudia Turbay Quintero, Colombian Ambassador in Accra and Hon. Alfred Vanderpuije, Mayor of Accra, with performances by Noyam, National Dance Company and the Colombians, who will play 'currulao' music, which has influences from Africa.
The group would also visit the Osu and Cape Coast castles, some forts in the Central Region as well as the Kakum National Park alongside courtesy calls at the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education, Tourism, Chieftaincy and Creative Arts and Gender, Children and Social Protection.
Located in South America , Colombia is bordered to the northwest by Panama http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama , to the north by the Caribbean Sea http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean_Sea , to the east by Venezuela http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venezuela / Brazil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil , to the south by Ecuador http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuador / Peru http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_America and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peru
Buenaventura, owing to its location, has become a transit point for the illegal drug trade. Consequently, cultural activities organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombia are designed to engage the youth and provide an alternative to potential recruitment.
The Embassy of Colombia in Accra is organizing the visit in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
