Leila Djansi on set while shooting Ties That Bind

Signals from Ghana's movie industry indicate that award-winning Ghanaian director Leila Djansi is likely to face an illegal ban.

Industry sources said some figures in the distribution sector of Ghana movie industry were allegedly influencing others not work with the 'Ties That Bind' director.

The reasons are not too clear but the developing issues border on certain comments made by Leila in an article she wrote about Ghana's movie industry which was subsequently published by NEWS-ONE.

The article, titled 'The Ghana Film Industry & Opera Square Mafia', outlined some of the negative activities of some distributors she described as “Opera Square Mafia.”

The article allegedly hurt the sensibilities of the distributors who are allegedly waging a distribution war against the director cum producer.

NEWS-ONE sources said the issue had spilled over to the extent that a distributor who asked Leila to make CD copies of 'Sinking Sands' had returned the copies.

However, the director refused to take the copies back because of an agreement she had with the distributor.

The interesting aspect of the brewing drama is that no distributor wants to openly show his or her face that they are involved.

The current incident follows what happened recently when the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) and its affiliate body allegedly banned some top actors even though Ghana's constitution does not give them the power to do so.

This is a case of one cutting one's nose to spite one's face. The film industries in Ghana and...
