TEXT: EXODUS 9:27-35
“And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders were ceased, he sinned yet more, and hardened his heart, he and his servants” (Exodus 9:34).

Insincere confessions and actions are evils that damn the soul and shut the door of mercy against many today. They are vices that will debar many from getting the best here on earth and entering the Kingdom of God.

We see Pharaoh in the text under reference, experiencing severe distress and humbling himself to Moses in the language of a repentant offender. He condemned himself and his land saying, “I and my people are wicked”, and thereby acknowledging the righteousness of God. He further promised to submit to the request of God and release the children of Israel. He begged Moses to pray for him. Moses prayed and God stopped the plagues, yet Pharaoh's heart was hardened and his confessions and purported repentance turned out to be hypocritical. All his pleas were from an insincere heart with pretentious appearance of sobriety which came from the fear of death. No wonder, after the removal of the plagues, he sinned even more.

The terror of the rod of judgment of God often invokes a seeming penitent acknowledgment from many people who do not have any motive to repent. Many under the chastening of God for their sins are daily confessing those sins. Paradoxically however, their hearts are totally glued to them. They make the outward appear white, but inwardly, they are full of dead men's bones.

“When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart” (Proverbs 26:25). Many are praying for healing today and would undertake to do anything to see to their healing, only to be healed to go back to their old sins. For such people, God reserves sorer punishment. What about you? Are you asking for mercy without a heart bent on total repentance? Remember, God is not mocked. “The triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment” (Job 20:5).
