Fellow Students,
I Must first of all wish you good tidings in AD 2010 and pray honesty, love, prosperity, happiness and all the other “fruit of the spirit” for you. It is yet another semester and we must give it our all and see our vision and dreams come true.
In 2005, it was reported that, over 100 products of the University of Ghana with first class honorary degree were rejected at an interview session organized for new recruits in a particular manufacturing company. Again in the said year there was a public outcry by Corporate Ghana with regard to the products being churned out by our universities.
To them, the products are virtually “misfit” for the available vacancies.
This is worrying considering that, Ghana produces over eighty-eight thousand (88,000) graduates every year with respect to our public and private universities, polytechnics and our Nursing training colleges etc.
Most important to them is the subject combination being read by the Bachelor of Arts students which are not geared towards administering to the needs of the country, the desires of Corporate Ghana and our dying poor.
It is in this vein that, we must the authorities of University of Ghana for their “newly found vision”, policy and steps at revising the course combination given to students at level 100. The policy states that, “All students entering the Bachelor of Arts program will offer three (3) subjects at Level 100, two subjects in Level 200 and Level 300, and either keep the two or offer only one subject at Level 400”.
Again, requirement courses for graduation for all students “have undergone changes in content and structure and are meant to (b) instill critical thinking in students' life and mode of analysis, (c) sharpen writing and language skills”.
Finally, “as from August 2010, work done by ALL students in the first year will count towards the award of degree”.
We must help save our degree from continuous devaluation and chart a course of hope, prosperity and shield ourselves from the constant unemployment. This is why we must be FIERCE; it must be URGENT; it must be NOW! IT MUST BE THE FIERCE URGENCY OF NOW!
