Following an extensive outage that disrupted internet services across West Africa since March 14, 2024, MainOne, a leading provider of undersea fiber optic internet connectivity, has announced the successful completion of repairs to its submarine cable.

The outage, impacting vital subsea communication cables in the region, led to significant disruptions in banking and telecommunication services, particularly in countries like Ghana and Nigeria.

In a recent statement chanced on by ModernGhana.com, MainOne, a subsidiary of Equinix, confirmed the completion of repairs and reiterated its commitment to upholding the integrity of this critical infrastructure.

"We are pleased to announce the successful repair of our submarine cable system, made possible through collaborative efforts with regional partners, maintenance providers, vessel owners, and permitting authorities. This achievement underscores our dedication to ensuring the utmost integrity of our submarine cable," the statement read.

Throughout the outage period, MainOne worked diligently to provide restoration capacity and reroute traffic on its network, minimizing the impact on its customers.

Acknowledging the collective efforts that facilitated a swift resolution, MainOne expressed gratitude to partners, vessel owners, permitting authorities, and, notably, its customers for their patience during the disruption.

"We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our partners for their unwavering support, our valued customers for their patience, and our dedicated team for their commitment during this challenging period," commented Funke Opeke, Managing Director of MainOne.

The successful restoration of its submarine cable underscores MainOne's commitment to its customers and its role in advancing West Africa's digital transformation.

MainOne was among the affected submarine communications cables, alongside others like the West Africa Cable System (WACS) and the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE), both of which were scheduled to complete repairs on April 28 and April 17, respectively.
