NDC group mounts pressure on NADMO coordinator to resign

Pressure is mounting on the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to resign his position as National Coordinator of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The call, which was first made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Tema East, Titus Glover, is been backed by a group calling itself Concerned Branch Executives of National Democratic Congress.

The group stressed that the NADMO Coordinator must step down in the spirit of fairness and the principles of the democratic tenets on which the NDC was built.

The group is also raising issues of neutrality and conflict of interest in Mr. Poturphy's continuous stay in office but the law appears not to have been violated.

Labour lawyer Charles Bawa Duah told Joy News the issue was a moral matter. He says unless Mr Portuphy work at NADMO will be affected by his new position as NDC Chair, there is no need for him to step down.

“Clearly it is a moral matter, whether or not the NADMO coordinator now being the party Chairman of the NDC can exercise his duties faithfully in accordance with the constitution and the act that created the institution then the law does not require him to resign.

“But if he thinks that he will be swayed or in some way his duties as national coordinator of NADMO will be affected by his position as chairman of the party, clearly he will have to resign", Mr Duah said.

According to Mr Duah because NADMO is a quasi security institution it was unlikely that the NDC Chairman's work will be affected.
