Popular delivery service Glovo has announced it will be closing its operations in Ghana and exiting the market, effective May 10.

In an email sent to partner restaurants, Glovo said the "difficult decision" was made to redirect resources towards its other global markets.

The Spanish startup operates in over 23 countries across the globe but has struggled to achieve profitability in Ghana.

“While we recognize the potential of the Ghana market, building a stronger position in the market and achieving profitability would require substantial investment over an extended period of time.

“This is why we have decided to redirect our resources towards the other 23 countries where Glovo operates, enabling us to better serve the millions of customers who use the Glovo app every day," Glovo said in the email.

The exit means Glovo's customer app will be unavailable for placing orders in Ghana beyond 10:00pm on May 10.

All outstanding payments to restaurants and vendors will be fulfilled per the company's terms and conditions.

News of Glovo's departure comes a blow for Ghana's budding delivery sector as the app had partnered with over 200 local restaurants and was popular among urban clients, employing several youths.
