The National Commission for Civic Education, Eastern Regional Directorate, has received 320 copies of the 1992 Constitution from the Governance Africa Foundation, a non-governmental organization, to augment civic education in the region.

A representative of the Governance Africa Foundation, Ms. Dogbey, who presented the copies, stressed the essence of civic education and called on the public to support the work of the NCCE.

The copies were received by the NCCE Eastern Regional Director, Ms. Ophelia Ankrah, and supported by the Eastern Regional Deputy Director, Mr. Augustine Bosrotsi, Mr. Emmanuel Asiedu Dadzie, Assistant Director, and Ms. Juliet Yeboah Simpey, Deputy Director.

In her remarks, Ms. Ankrah emphasizes the crucial need for Ghana to adhere to the tenets of good governance and promote peaceful elections as the country prepares for the December 7 polls.

“As a nation, we have made significant progress, but we must continue to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity to ensure our democracy thrives,” Ms. Ankrah stated during the presentation, which was monitored by the Communication for Development and Advocacy Consult (CDA Consult), [email protected], which is a development communication advocacy non-governmental organization.

She said good governance is essential, which must hinge on transparency and accountability, through which trust is built between citizens and government, fostering a sense of unity and national pride.

Ms. Ankrah adjudged that predictable policies, stable institutions, and a business-friendly environment attract investment and drive economic development.

The NCCE Eastern Regional Director also stressed inclusive decision-making, equal opportunities, and protection of human rights to promote social cohesion and equity as fundamentals to help strengthen democratic systems.

She stressed the need for respect for the rule of law and peaceful resolution of conflicts as the nations warm up for the general elections, emphasizing the need for credible elections to ensure a stable and secure environment.

Ms. Ankrah noted that peaceful elections are critical for democratic consolidation; therefore, all actors must work together to ensure free, fair, and credible elections to strengthen our democracy, as well as ensure that power is transferred in an orderly manner. Whoever wins the December election there will be the transfer of power.

The NCCE Eastern Regional Director emphasized the crucial need to maintain national unity before, during, and after the polls, stressing that “peaceful elections promote reconciliation, healing, and unity, rather than division and conflict.”.

“Peaceful elections would enhance Ghana's reputation globally, attracting investment and development partnerships, and it would encourage active citizenship, civic engagement, and ownership of our democracy,” Ms. Ankrah noted.

“Let us work together to strengthen our institutions and laws, promote transparency and accountability, encourage inclusive decision-making, foster a culture of peace and tolerance, and support credible and peaceful elections,” she noted.

Ms. Ankrah stressed: “Together, we can build a Ghana that is a beacon of democracy, peace, and prosperity in Africa and the world.”.
