Ghana’s judiciary has granted permission for live coverage of upcoming Supreme Court hearings challenging aspects of the country's controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo gave the green light to the Attorney General's request to allow television and radio broadcasts of proceedings related to two cases contesting the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024.
The bill, which seeks to restrict advocacy of LGBTQ rights and related cultural activities, has faced strong opposition from human rights groups since being passed by Parliament in February.
However, opponents have launched legal challenges arguing parts of the legislation infringe on civil liberties.
Two of such cases will be heard in the Supreme Court today, with two further challenges pending in the High Court.
In his letter to the Chief Justice on Tuesday, May 7, Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame wrote: "The public interest in these cases...is very high. Live broadcasting will enhance the transparency engendered by coverage of the proceedings, which would be in the best interest of the administration of justice."
The public interest comes as President Nana Akufo-Addo continues to deliberate assenting to the bill, holding off until the courts have ruled on the current legal disputes.
