Commey Remains An Obstruction In My Unification Bid - Lopez

America’s lightweight contender, Teofimo Lopez, believes IBF champion, Richard Commey, remains an obstruction in his bid to unify the division with WBC, WBA and WBO titleholder, Vasyl Lomachenko next year.

Lopez, who is billed to fight Commey for the IBF crown on December 14 in New York, reiterated his desire to go past the Ghanaian who he admitted was in front of him at the moment.

The hard-hitting Ghanaian fighter would make his second world title defence against Lopez in a mandatory bout at the Madison Square Garden with the winner scheduled to face Lomachenko in a unification.

Commey and Lopez have both been in camp preparing feverishly for the much-anticipated fight next month with both camps hopeful of grabbing the win on the night.

“That’s the guy that is in front of me right now, and I know that. Honestly, this is huge, man. I didn’t notice it. I am now. This is big, man,” Lopez told BoxingScene.com.

Commey is undefeated in his last five bouts against Hedi Slimani, Alejandro Luna, Yardley Cruz, Isa Chaniev and Raymundo Beltran with the last four wins coming by way of knockouts.

The 32-year-old Ghanaian has an impressive world championship record having won twice against Chaniev and Beltran and lost once against Robert Easter Jnr in 2016.

Lopez, on the other hand, is undefeated in 14 bouts and would make his maiden world championship bow against an experienced fighter in Commey. The 22-year-old American earned a unanimous decision victory over Nakatani Masayoshi in an eliminator.
