The first-ever Senior High Schools (SHS) Festival of Relay Race comes off at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on December 4, 2019.
The event is put up by Dreamland SportsPlus is dubbed ‘Make or Break’, and under the strong theme ‘The Power of the Baton – To make or unmake, no dull moment’.
Emmanuel Olla Williams CEO of Dreamland SportsPlus said all the Senior High Schools in the Central Region have been invited as the programme has been sanctioned by the Central Regional Sports Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
He said motivation to organize the programme came from watching Ghana’s performances at the 2019 African Games in Morocco where the male quartet squad won gold, and the World Athletics Championship in Doha, Qatar where the favoured female team dropped their baton.
“Judging by the records of our national athletes’ performances at international Games, I observed that Ghana’s strength lies in the sprint events, particularly the relays, the Festival of Relays is therefore aimed at unearthing talents to be groomed into national and international stars,” he said.
He mentioned the seven events as 4 x100m, 4 x200m, 4 x 400m, 4 x 800m, 1,000m mixed relay, 2,400 mixed medley and the new 2 x 2 x 400m relay.
30 SHS, each to be represented by 60 athletes, totalling 1,800 athletes have confirmed their participation in the competition.
According to Olla Williams, the programme has already started generating arguments among the students and it would be exciting and thrilling.
He called on companies whose brands are associated with sports and education to support the initiative which is going to be held in the other regions.
