University Sports Festival opens at Winneba

Winneba, (C/R) Jan 21, GNA - The 19th edition of the Ghana University's Sports Association (GUSA) bi-annual sports festival got underway at the University of Education, Winneba. The week-long festival has all the public universities participating. They are the University of Ghana, (UG) Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, (KNUST) University of Cape Coast, (UCC) University for Development Studies, (UDS) and University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, (UMAT) and the host, University of Education, Winneba, (UEW).

About 900 sports men and women are competing in the various disciplines of table tennis, volleyball, tennis, soccer, badminton, basketball, hockey, handball and athletics.

In the opening football match (Men), UEW thrashed UMAT 3-0. University of Winneba earlier wasted a penalty kick awarded them in the 19th minute when Opoku Antwi shot off target and had to wait until the 46th minute to record the first goal through Desmond. Kwame Agyapong made it two in the 76th minute after receiving a neat pass from Shaibu Mohammed with captain Arthur Peters sealing the doom of the "miners' with a classic goal in the 89th minute.

Other results in the hockey competition was, UEW (Men) drew 1-1 with their KNUST counterparts while UEW (women) lost heavily by 1-4 to UCC. UEW men beat UCC men 18-16 in their handball encounter. In athletics, Prosper Agege of KNUST won the 1500 meter race in a time of four minutes nine seconds (4 minutes 9 sec) to shatter the old record of 4min. 11.1 seconds. Ayuma Rashida of KNUST won the 1500 meter race in the women's encounter in a time of 5 min. 22 sec. followed by Vida Tutu and Naomi Sarpong all of UEW.
