Nana Wereko-Ampem Passes Away

Reports available to AUTHENTIC KAPITAL RADIO have it that the Chairman of the Council of Patrons of Accra Hearts of Oak, Nana Wereko-Ampem II has passed away.
Nana Wereko-Ampem II who assumed that role on 3rd February 1994 as the first Chief Patron of the Club alongside Mr. Harry Sawyer, Mr. D. S Quarcoopome, Mr. S. S Annie (deceased), Mr. J. S Addo and Mr. C. K Dewornu died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra yesterday.
Known in private life as Mr. E.N Omabo, Nana Wereko-Ampem was the Gyaasehene of Akuapem Traditional Area and Chief of Amanokrom in the Eastern Region. Under his administration, Accra Hearts of Oak won four F.A cups, seven League Trophies, CAF Champions League Trophy (2000) and the CAF super Cup as well as the CAF Confederations Cup. He was also instrumental in the acquisition of the Pobiman Land purported for the construction of a modern state of the art t Stadium for the Club and also acquired the Club's current secretariat at Adabraka.
The Chief News Editor of Kapital Radio, Mr. Charles Brafo-Anakwah who hails from Akuapem revealed that three weeks ago, the town was set to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the enstoolement of Nana Wereko-Ampem, but just as the people were gathering for the celebration of the programme was called off. This move raised suspicion over the life of the Chief who at the time had been reported seriously sick.
He said he left the town with rumor in the air that the Chief had died but that could not be substantiated until yesterday.
The late Nana Wereko-Ampem is reported to be loved by the people of the area for his generosity to the community. He is reported to have provided the people with the needed social amenities including, water supply, electricity and at one point provided every resident of the community with paints to fashion their house.
Frantic efforts to reach the management of Accra Hearts of Oak for a word on the demise of Nana Wereko-Ampem have yielded no dividends as all the mangement members have said that it is not traditionally right to speak publicly on the issue at this time.They however took turns to console each other on the death of Nana Wereko-Ampem.
