JAN 3, 2019 LISTEN

Former Black Stars striker, Nii Odartey Lamptey has called on the Black Stars players not to focus on money ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Kwesi Appiah and his playing body have been charged to win the 2019 AFCON after 37 years trophy drought.

However, many believe money has been the main reason why the players have failed to win any major trophy for the country.

After excelling in the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup, the four-time African champions shambolically exited from the 2014 Mundial after failing to win a single game.

It will be recalled that ahead of the final group game against Portugal, the playing threatened not to play the match until they are been paid their appearance fee.

But ahead of Africa's prestigious tournament, the former Anderlecht star has cautioned the playing to focus on winning the tournament than focusing on money.

"Money has been the reason why the team has not been able to win the trophy over the years but going forward, I will urge the players not to focus on the money," he told Accra based Asempa FM.

"Money is important in everything we do but if they win the ultimate, they will be surprised that the president will surprise them," he added.

CAF is yet to name a host for the tournament after Cameroon lost it hosting right.
