StarTimes To Pump $100,000 Into Mini Tournament

Football News StarTimes To Pump 100,000 Into Mini Tournament
SEP 17, 2018 LISTEN

Vice President of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Mr Alex Akummey has confirmed that they have signed an agreement with broadcast giants StarTimes and they will be pumping $100,000 into the mini-tournament they are organizing.

The mini-tournament is a proposed cup tournament to keep the clubs in the country active with the Ghana Premier League currently in limbo.

An Anas Aremeyaw Anas investigative work has left football activities in the country in tatters and a reforming process is yet to be undertaken. GHALCA in collaboration with StarTimes is, therefore, organizing the tournament for the clubs until the normalcy is achieved by the normalization committee for league activities to resume.

Mr Alex Akummey made the confirmation of the amount StarTimes is bringing on board earlier today in an interview on Asempa FM.

Despite the huge sum of money already assured GHALCA, they say it will not be enough and they are looking for more sponsors to come on board before the tournament starts.

Over a hundred matches will be played with 52 clubs already confirmed to have registered. The GHALCA vice president believes the $100,000 StarTimes is bringing on board it will not be enough.

Therefore they are in talks with other sponsors to come and board and they have made the clubs understand that if they do not get money, the tournament will not come on.

“We have had discussions with the clubs involved and we have told them that we do not want them to enter into a competition and to be at a loss at the end of the day. We want a competition that even when we do not gain profits out of it, we will break even and there will not be any problem”, he explained.

He further revealed that they have assigned some of their members to get some sponsors to come on board and they are in advanced talks with communications giant MTN over a possible sponsorship agreement.

Additionally, GHALCA has sent a proposal to the Sports Ministry to convince them to come on board and sponsor the tournament.

Even though Honorable Isaac Asiamah has not said yes to their proposal, Mr Alex Akummey is optimistic something good will come out from discussions with the ministry.

GHALCA is also set to meet with the Normalization committee set up by FIFA and the Government of Ghana to give them the green light to go ahead with the planned tournament.
