The Mcdan Communities Champions League which hit Tema over the weekend saw Chelsea becoming the second U-15 champions after beating Arsenal babies 2-0 in the finals.

The Community based grassroots football plus Education through reading (Books and Boots) which was revived in Ashaiman thronged the Tema Community 4, TDC Park on Saturday, September 15, 2018.

Arsenal Babies, having had a wonderful day after knocking out the likes of St Joseph United 2-1 and Super Abease Stars 1-0 in the semifinal had a difficult game against the Blues. Chelsea, a club based in Community 2 defied all odds and lifted the trophy with medals, qualifying to fight for the Communities Champions League Knockout finals after outplaying their opponents.

Like EPL’s London derby, both teams couldn’t find their rhythm in the first half which produced no goal with least chances created. However, Chelsea bounced back better, took the game to Arsenal Babies and proved a point by getting their first goal in the second half under a minute of play. They were undone as player of the tournament, Emmanuel Asare gave his side the cushion 3 minutes later.

The Blues of Community 2 who had beaten Great Ambassadors 1-0 and Great Palmas 2-0 then dominated the game till the final whistle.

Super Abease Stars and Great Palmas had edged out Future Heroes and Fhotizo Fc in the prelims by 1-0 and 4-2 accordingly. Wonderers Club from Prampram who anticipated winning the Tema edition was only allowed to play a curtain raiser against St John’s Fc after they were disqualified due to the location of the Club. They, however, won the game by 3-0.

Speaking to the media, Chief Executive Officer of Books and Boots Academy, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah says they need to improve every week, appealing to the communities to get involved to make it great.

“Great thanks to the teams, managers and all who came to watch. We are learning because we haven’t done it to this level yet, we have so many communities to go and it is better than last week so I am happy because we need to improve. It is a good sign if we improving every week, hopefully by the time we hit week 5, 6, halfway through, it is going to be very good. I am very delighted with the level of discipline and competitiveness, the genuine age of the players and the turnout. This will stand out to be something great, once the communities get involved.”

Chelsea thus becomes the week 2 winners and joins Klagon based Mission Fc as the train heads to another Community in a fortnight.

With Mcdan as main sponsors, and Active Minds as Education partners since 2009, the initiative has captured the attention of Medal Pharmacy and for the first time, BBC Africa took coverage of the event.
