While his son featured for the U.S. national team in a win over Mexico, George Weah was honoured with a friendly appearance for Liberia.

The father/son duo both took the field on the same day, with Timothy Weah starting and playing 89 minutes in the USMNT's 1-0 win over 10-man Mexico.

Earlier in the day, George, 51, featured for Liberia in a 2-1 home defeat against Nigeria.

The 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year, who became president of Liberia in December with 60 percent of the vote, started and played 79 minutes in a friendly organized to retire the No. 14 shirt worn by the former AC Milan, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain star.

Widely regarded as one of the top strikers of his generation, the elder Weah scored 22 goals in 61 appearances for Liberia while becoming the only African player to win a FIFA World Player of the Year or Ballon d'Or.

Timothy Weah, meanwhile, has become a fixture with the USMNT since making his senior debut against Paraguay in March.

His showing against Mexico wasn't his best, with the U.S. failing to find much space to work in against a young and quick El Tri side.

The 18-year-old forward, who was born in New York, has made two league appearances for PSG this season, scoring his first senior goal in a 3-0 win over Caen to open the Ligue 1 season.

After falling to Brazil to open the international break, the U.S. topped Mexico behind a goal from Tyler Adams.
