PRESIDENT George Weah played for Liberia in a friendly match against Nigeria... 15 years after retiring.

The 51-year-old dug out his boots, chucked on the No14 jersey and proudly donned the captain's armband for the showdown with the Super Eagles.

The friendly at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex was arranged to honour the former Monaco star.

After he warmed up with the Liberia squad, the excited crowd chanted the national anthems before he made his way onto the pitch for kick-off.

Weah's former team-mate and squad coach James Debbah was also named in the starting XI.

And the 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year immediately proved that he had not lost his touch.

Weah tried to break the deadlock after eight minutes, but his shot was intercepted.

And video footage showed the 51-year-old confidently heading the ball out of the penalty box after a corner kick was delivered into the area.

The 51-year-old battled relentlessly, but his efforts went unrewarded and his team found themselves 2-0 down at half-time.

Henry Onyekuru found the top corner to open the scoring before Simeon Nwankwo doubled the tally.

Weah received a standing ovation from the fans when he was hauled off the pitch in the 80th minute.

Ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who signed him for Monaco in 1988, previously said that Weah's rise from Monaco to Liberia president is the greatest story ever.

And the 51-year-old has just added another remarkable chapter to his story.
