Mauritania secured a 2-0 win over Burkina Faso in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification Group I match at the Stade Olympique in Nouakchott on Saturday night.

As a result, Al Murabitun moved to the top of the Group I standings, while the Stallions slipped down to second spot.

Al Murabitun went into this encounter having secured a 1-0 win over Botswana away in their previous Group I game in June 2017, while the Stallions had thrashed Angola 3-1 at home in their previous group match.

The deadlock was broken eight minutes before the half-time break and it was Ismail Diakhite who scored.

The 27-year-old striker beat Burkina Faso goalkeeper Herve Koffi to make it 1-0 to Mauritania.

It was soon 2-0 to Mauritania as the hosts doubled their lead five minutes before the half-time break.

Khassa Camara was the man who beat Koffi to ensure that the first half ended with Mauritania leading 2-0.

The Stallions tried to pull one back in the second-half with Austria-based striker Zakaria Sanogo leading their attack.

However, the Mauritania defence which was led by France-based defender Abdoul Ba was able to contain Sanogo and his Burkina Faso team-mates.
