Former Ghana and Chelsea legend, Michael Essien has reiterated that Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Teye Partey will be a great leader for the country's national team, the Black Stars of Ghana.

The combative midfielder has been a key figure for the Spanish side since breaking into the team.

Partey helped the Madrid based club to win the Europa League last season defeating Olympique Marseille 3:1.

He led the Black Stars team in the International friendly matches against Japan and Iceland in June where Ghana beat Japan 3-0 and drew 2-2 with Iceland.

And Essien is backing Partey to become the new Black Stars captain.

"There are good players in the team but I think Partey is doing great and he can lead the team,” he told TV3.

"He is doing wonderful with his Club and the National team as well, he captained the team on few occasion and I think he will be a good leader.”

Michael Essien, 33, announced his retirement from International football having participated at two World Cups and two Cup of Nations tournament with the Black Stars.
