25.07.2018 LISTEN

Mr Charles Osei Assibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) has said, Ghana would consider bidding for the rights to host the 2020 World Armwrestling Championship.

The annual world event was first held in 1979 with various countries participating in the event.

South Africa hosted the event in 2004 in Durban and that was the last time an African country hosted the World Championship.

Mr Assibey in an interview with GNA Sports indicated that Ghana would throw in strong bid to host the World in 2020 when Africa would be handed the mantle to host the event.

"The good news is that in 2020 an African country must host the World Championships, where over 2,000 players would compete and Ghana would consider hosting the World and we will prove that we can indeed host the World.

Mr Assibey further stressed that Armwrestling is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and has been growing from strength to strength.

He said it was time for Ghana to prove its prowess when they host the Africa Championships in the next coming days.

Meanwhile, the Africa Armwrestling Championship which is slated on the 26-29 July at the Hathramani Hall at the Accra Sports Stadium would see different African countries like Nigeria, Mali, Morocco, Seychelles etc compete for the Championship.
