MAY 29, 2018 LISTEN

Ahead of the 3rd edition of the Liquid Sports Ghana Awards to be held at the plush Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, it has been revealed that as many as 7 new national outdoor records were set by Ghanaian athletes around the globe during the 2017 athletics season.

The 3rd Liquid Sports Ghana Awards which is sponsored by Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Rokmer Pharma Ltd and the Indian Women’s Association of Ghana will recognise and reward athletes, individuals and organisations for their contributions to sports in Ghana.

The latter list includes the feat by 800m runner Alex Amankwah, who broke into the top 20 world 800m list, after shattering Kennedy Osei’s 23-year-old national 800m record with a 1:44.80 (NR) clocking on 19th May 2017. Alex thus becomes the fastest Ghanaian ever over the two-lap event.

Other notable national records came in the names of 2016 African triple jump champion Nadia Eke who once again improved the national record to 13.93m (NR); Atsu Nyamadi’s trailblazing 7811pts in the decathlon and Agnes Abu’s 1500m record of 4.17.75m (NR).

There were two new entrants in the women’s throw events. The unknown Claudia Ababio’s 15.34m (NR) in the shot put and Emelda Mal-Annan’s 60.09m (NR) caught the eye with their national feats.

Elsewhere, the Middle Tennessee State University pair of Sampson Laari and Agnes Abu recorded national bests in the 1 Mile and 3000m events respectively. Laari crossed the finish line in 8:05.88m while Abu produced a 4.43.61m(NR) clocking in the indoor season on 19th February 2018.
