Ghana Swimming Team Shines In Dakar

Ghana swimming national team participated in the Africa Zone 2 seniors swimming and open water championships which took place in Dakar, Senegal from 4th - 6th May 2018.

Countries that participated include Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Togo, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Benin, The Gambia and Sierra Leone.

Ghana won total 25 medals made up of 10 gold, 9 silver and 6 bronze.

The best male and female swimmer of the championship also came from Ghana.

Ghana broke records in 50meters freestyle, 200meters, butterfly and 100meters butterfly in the male category. In the female category, 200meters backstroke, 400 individual medley, 800meters individual medley and 200meters butterfly records were also broken.

In the open water event of 5km, Zaira Akua Forson (13 yrs) and Kaya Adwoa Forson (16yrs) won gold and silver medals respectively in the female category.

To crown it all, Ghana was adjudged 2nd overall best.

President of the Ghana Swimming Association, Theo Wilson Edzie under whose reign swimming has become very popular and winning medals commended the team for the wonderful performance. He said this is the first time they are achieving such feat which should be commended as historic and motivating for the future of swimming in Ghana.

“Such a display by my swimmers has consoled my soul in the light of charges against me, and I salute Kaya, Zaria the youngest, Abeiku, Kow, Mayaa, Becky, Paa and PY the coach as well as their parents and team officials who have proved that hard work pays. Thanks and well done. God knows best" said the suspended president.
