Friends of Boxing (FOB) Member, Nii Allotei Cofie Grateful To SWAG

The Friends of Boxing in Ghana (FOB) have commended the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) for maintaining the annual awards and improving as the years go by.

Nii Kpakpo Allotei Cofie, a keen boxing enthusiast who is an executive member of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) said SWAG should be praised for honouring the nation’s best and outstanding sportsmen and women.

“The awards have been running smoothly over the years and I think Kwabena Yeboah and his men must be commended,” he said.

He urged corporate Ghana to support the development and promotion of sports in Ghana, as it is a huge industry that employs a large section of the population, especially the youth who must be guided to be productive and patriotic.

He noted that boxing has enjoyed some good patronage in the season and the Bukom Boxing Arena has contributed immensely to the return of boxing passion in Accra and the rising of promoters and management syndicates.

Nii Allotei Cofie named boxers like Richard Commey, Duke Micah, Fred Lawson, Isaac Dogboe, Emmanuel Tagoe, Sherrif Quaye, Ayitey Powers, Bastie Samir and Bukom Banku aka Braimah Kamoko as some of the popular boxers who have excited fans in the season.

He prayed that Commey, Micah and Dogboe, who are close to annexing world titles reach their goals and aspirations. He praised Coach Carl Lokko for getting the nomination as Coach of the Year 2017. Lokko handled three Ghanaian boxers to claim three World Boxing Council (WBC) International titles at the Bukom Boxing Arena. He also nearly annexed the IBF Lightweight title following a split decision when Richard Commey lost to Robert Easter in the USA.

He congratulated the GBA led by Lawyer Peter Zwennes and the Ghana Boxing Supporters Union (GBSU) who have also been singing, chanting and praying for the success of Ghanaian boxers.

The son of former GBA president and WBC vice president, now a promoter of juvenile boxing noted that there are more boxers ready to fight and the technical aspect of the game must be supported by the sports authorities.

He congratulated Jesse Lartey who won the lone bronze medal for Ghana at the 21^st Commonwealth Games in Australia, as well as his coach Ofori Asare who has been nominated for Dedication and Valour.

Coach Asare has won two bronze medals for Ghana in Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018.
