As part of plans to build Youth Resource Centers across the ten regions of Ghana, Minister for Youth and Sports together with the Volta Regional Minister, Archibald Yao Letsa on Wednesday 21 March 2018 cut sod for the first youth Resource Center in Nuwumu, Ho in the Volta regional Capital.
The youth resource centre, a sporting facility which is estimated at USD 2.4 Million would accommodate a FIFA standard football pitch, an eight-lane Athletic track, a Handball, Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis courts and a Gymnasium. The facility will also have an ICT Center, a Modern Restaurant, an Entrepreneurship and Counseling centre.
The football pitch is expected to have a seating capacity of 10,000. The facility which is through the collaborative effort of the National Youth Authority and the Ministry of Youth and Sport is scheduled to be completed in the next nine (9) months and will be executed by Wilkado Constructions.
The CEO of the National Youth Authority, Emmanuel Asigiri said the facility when completed would transform the state of the Volta region.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah was grateful to the chiefs of Adaklu for the provision of a 100 acre land for the Multi-purpose Youth Resource Center.
The minister said the project is a legacy project that will have no space for young children to play on the street at the expense of their lives.
He added that the Youth Resource centre is more than just a stadium because it will build and develop the youth in their career path hence the Entrepreneurship and Counseling centre within the facility.
“This project is more than a sporting facility, In addition, we are going to have a counselling centre for the youth on career path and development, this will be handled here, the choices they have to make for their future”.
Chief of Ho Dome, Togbe Adzie Lakle who expressed mix feeling at the ceremony said though it’s a needful facility the original purpose of the land has not been met.
“We are happy with this development but we want you to know that the reason why we gave out the land is because of a Sports Complex, not a youth resource centre.”
“We were also told that we will be having a sporting complex which will be twice the size of the cape coast stadium that was why we travelled all the way to cape coast to see how the stadium looks like”.
The Regional Minister, Archibald Yao Letsa assured the chief and people that the promise of a sports stadium has not been abandoned but urged the people to embrace the new youth resource centre because it will serve the entire region.
“I cannot hide my personal joy, as I witnessed this historic sod cutting ceremony to signal the beginning of a magnificent and modern state of the art Sports Stadium Complex in Ho, to serve the entire people of the region”.
In a sharp contrast to all the excitement of the yet to arrive multi-purpose sporting facility, the Dufia of Adaklu-Ahoe and a senior division member who represented the Adaklu state, Togbe Agbobada IV expressed his disappointment on how the chiefs from Adaklu were left out of the ceremony.
“We are not very pleased because we felt we were not treated fairly by the people in power, today, where the event took place is at the centre of the Adaklu land both Traditionally and Administratively”.
He further stated that the Adaklu traditional counsel is not against any form of development on their land.
“We know governance is a continuous process whether there is a change or not, but the people who planned the event should have contacted the people of Adaklu being the allodia landowners”
“We are not against any development but we felt the right thing must be done”.
