DEC 22, 2017 LISTEN

World Boxing Council (WBC) Muay Thai and World Kickboxing Federation (WKBF) super welterweight champion, Alhassan Okoe Okine is optimistic of defending his title in February when he comes against Ben ‘Bullrider’ Burrage in Australia.

The Dubai-based kickboxer Okine has defeated the ‘Bull rider’ twice but the determined opponent is once again challenging the Ghanaian for his world title for the third time. Okine, nicknamed, the ‘Ghana Van Damme’ is currently in the country preparing for the fight and at the same time promoting the sport in the country.

“I am preparing very well for the fight and convinced I’ll successfully defend my title to make the nation proud,” he stated. The 37-year-old said, he would however not underestimate his opponent.

“I snatched the WKBF World title from him so he is angry to reclaim the title but I am more determined to retain it to begin another successful year in my career,” he added.

Within 10 years of his career, Okine has won six titles including the UAE Championships in 2010, Middle East title in 2012, two Tag Team Championships under light welter and welterweight categories and the current WKBF title in 2017.

He called on the government to support the sport as it is developing rapidly and engaging several youths in the country.

In a long-term, Okine is focused on the formation of a national team that would compete in international competitions, adding that, there would also be the need to form national associations. He urged upcoming athletes to be disciplined and focused in order to develop their potential to win laurels for the country.

Okine’s coach, George Addey praised the athlete for his exploits over the years, adding that, he is currently fearful and most kickboxers are not willing to challenge him for his titles.
