Mr Benson Tongo Baba, President of the GOC, who conferred the honour on him, said that though a large number of eminent personalities were taken into consideration prior to the appointment, they regard Dr Jonah as the most outstanding of all as he had achieved so much on the local and international scene.

Dr Jonah, in accepting his new role in the Olympic family, bemoaned the poor performance of the nation at the Olympics level despite the abundance of sporting talents in all the sporting disciplines. Dr Jonah who attributed the decline to lack of funds and infrastructure in the country said the level of goodwill created by the GOC in the corporate world is an indication of a positive image for Ghana sports in the near future.

He commended the leadership of the GOC for the successful organization of the General Meeting of the Association of the National Olympic Committee of Africa (ANOCA).

According to him, the success of the programme was a true reflection of the quality leadership being provided by the GOC in shaping Ghana sports.
