Ghana's senior national Women Volleyball team, the Black Spikers, have qualified to the final round of the Federation of International Volleyball, 2018 World Cup.

The first round qualification which was hosted by Cote D’Ivoire ended on Sunday, August 20, 2017. According to President of the Ghana Volleyball Association, Paul Atchoe, four countries were supposed to compete in a round robin game for two to progress to the next stage but Niger failed to show up.

He said Team Ghana who went by road on Thursday had to sleep at the Ghana/Cote D’Ivoire border as the border was closed upon reaching there at 11:30pm. The team finally arrived at the venue of the tournament (Palais des Sports Hall) Treshville, Abidjan at 1:45 pm and had to prepare quickly for a match.

Ghana triumphed over the Ivorians by 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 16-25, and 25-17) on Friday evening after all appeals to postpone their match due to stress failed.

They went on to Nigeria on Saturday but unfortunately lost in 3 straight sets (3-0). News from Cote D’Ivoire has it that the Nigerians were too strong for Ghana. It is therefore necessary for team Ghana to have adequate training ahead of the next stage.

The 3 days tourney eventually had Nigeria emerging winners after they beat Cote D’Ivoire on Sunday.

Ghana with 3 points from the tourney thus join Nigeria to the final round of qualification in Cameroon, come September 2017.

The team which was made of up 14 players and 6 technical members have since arrived in Ghana.

The male side of the team have also qualified for the last round after topping the four nations that converged at Niger last month.
