Henry Manly-Spain, a popular boxing promoter has been elected as the new 1st Vice-President of the Ghana Boxing Authority after winning the elections at the 2017 Congress in Accra on Wednesday.

Mr. Manly-Spain, financier of Golden Mike Promotions saw off competition from now former 2nd Vice-President, Rabbon Dodoo polling 47 of 76 valid votes cast against 29 obtained by Mr. Dodoo.

In the other elections for executive board members positions, Cape Coast based Isaac Kweku Grantson lost out after only polling 38 votes to finish 5th in the race to elect four.

Former Greater Accra Regional chairman, Lord Isaac Acquaye topped the poll with 69 votes, followed in second place by Alhaji Zaid Mashud who received 68 votes.

The only member of the former board to retain his seat, Alhaji Murtala Tofiq came third with 66 votes whilst boxing coach, Lawrence Carl Lokko earned the 4th spot with 65 votes.

Incumbent president, Peter Zwennes was retained unopposed, same as Abraham Neequaye who faced no competition to become the new 2nd Vice-President.

Experienced referee/judge, Fred Ghartey was also retained unopposed as treasurer.

The elected executives were sworn-in by National Sports Authority (NSA) deputy Director-General, Saka Acquaye to begin a new four year mandate in charge of running professional boxing in Ghana.

“We will raise boxing to a high level that it will compete with football for all to know that football is not the only sport but boxing can be even bigger,” an elated Henry Manly-Spain said in celebrations.

Peter Zwennes, who is a legal practitioner said his administration has brought some level of discipline into the sport and more new people are now watching boxing.

He noted that Ghana has the potential to get four or six world champions in the near future, commending the authorities for putting up the Bukom Boxing Arena.

He named the potential world champions as Emmanuel Tagoe, Isaac Dogboe, Obodai Sai, Duke Micah, Richard Commey and Fred Lawson who are highly rated in the world rankings.
