APR 24, 2017 LISTEN

Ghanaian sprint queen Janet Amponsah has qualified for the 2017 International Association of Athletics Federations Championship (IAAF) in London after clocking a time of 23.10secs.

The 24-year-old met the qualification time to secure a slot at the competition after finishing second in the 200 metres event with a time of 23.10s at the War Eagle invitational competition in the United States.

Amponsah only finished behind Courtney Blanden who made 23.01 to top a list of athletes who were vying for a place at the IAAF.

The former student of the T.I Ahamadiya Secondary School thus becomes the first Ghanaian to qualify for this year’s IAAF Championship.

Having participated at the African Championships, World Junior Championships, Commonwealth Games, All-Africa Games and most recently the Olympics Games, the Middle Tennessee State University student will be making her first appearance at the IAAF Championship.

Compatriot Elizabeth Dadzie could not make the time after making 24.86.

The young athlete (Janet Amponsah) has already won medals for Ghana after clinching silver with Ghana’s 4x100 relay team at the Commonwealth games in 2010 and Africa Championship in 2012 as well as the 2015 All African Games.

She also won bronze with the relay team at the 2014 African Championships in Marrakech (Morocco).
