AFCON Hosting Rights To Be Rotational - Ghana FA Boss Kwesi Nyantakyi

Cup of Nations AFCON Hosting Rights To Be Rotational - Ghana FA Boss Kwesi Nyantakyi
MAR 29, 2017 LISTEN

CAF Executive Committee member and President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi wants the hosting rights for the Africa Cup of Nations to be rotational to ensure even distribution of hosting rights.

The criteria used to determine the AFCON host is a voting system by CAF ExCo members with the majority winning the bid.

The present criteria has ensured only a few countries have hosted the AFCON without any regional balance but the vibrant Ghana FA capo says the right should be on rotational basis in his view.

In an interview on InsideAfricaFootball WhatsApp platform, Kwesi Nyantakyi said: “Personally I think hosting rights should be shared fairly and if possible on a rotational basis like the World Cup.”

“When Ghana was bidding to host the 2017 AFCON we felt the same. Because in 2012 it was in Gabon/Equatorial Guinea and 2015 in Equatorial Guinea, we felt 2017 should go to Ghana or Algeria but the ExCo thought otherwise,” he added.

“There were other views that in 1998 Burkina Faso hosted with Ghana/Nigeria hosting in 2000, so there was nothing wrong with the current awards.

Nyantakyi, is Ghana’s most successful FA president and has served on the CAF ExCo. He was recently re-elected into the FIFA Council and will be expected to champion a program to get the AFCON bid rotated.
