15.03.2017 LISTEN

The death has been reported in Accra of Gideon Quartey, President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF).

The late Quartey who was CEO of the Dade Boxing Club and Promotions was expected to be a delegate at the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) elections and it was at Alisa Hotel, venue for the much talked about congress that Mr. Peter Zwennes, President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) who is in charge of professional boxing told Yours Truly about the sad occurrence.

According to sources, the late Gideon Quartey has been sick for some time and was battling with his fitness.

He has been organiising the Friday Night Boxing Programme at the Prisons Canteen, and that is one of the talent hunt zones for amateur boxing in Ghana.

Just last week, he organized a training programme for boxing officials and he was looking forward to build another credible team for the Black Bombers, the national squad.

Quartey will be remembered for enhancing amateur boxing in the country, leading to the discovery of the likes of Commonwealth and WBC Silver Bantamweight Champion Duke Micah.

He was also a former vice president of the Greater Accra Boxing Association before becoming president of GABF.

May his soul rest in peace.
