Ghana Premier League [GPL] new boys, Elmina Sharks were initiated into the top flight league on Sunday as Aduana Stars pip them by 1-0 at the Nduom Sports Complex in Elmina.
Lots were expected from the ‘Sharks,’ otherwise known as ‘Botweku Mba’ who were playing their first ever Premier League game at home in front of a packed crowd but, in the end it was Godfred Saka’s 28th minute free kick that made the difference.
The home side [Elmina Sharks] took control of the game from the blast of the whistle enjoying much of the possession except that they couldn’t nullify Aduna’s defensive wall to create more goal scoring opportunities.
Aduana Stars’ first threatening attack came in the 26th minute when Wahab Adams, Zakaria Mumuni, Derrick Sasraku, and Nathaniel Asamoah combined beautifully to punch hole into the Sharks’ defence.
Nathaniel Asamoah was brought down on the edge of the box in the process which Godfred Saka dunked the ball straight into the net from 20 yards away to put the visitors' noses in front.
In one breath, Godfred Saka’s drive looks very beautiful as the ball scratched the roof of the post on its way to goal, but, from the reverse angle, the goal looks very controversial as the ball seemed not to have crossed the goal line.
Aduana Stars threw away possession to Elmina Sharks in the second half, but defended in their numbers to keep the home side at bay in the third half of the pitch.
Good old Richard Atika who came on for Prince Boateng in the second half nearly pulled parity for Elmina Sharks, but his thunderbolt that deceived Joseph Addo [Aduana Stars goalkeeper] could only flashed the goal post like a lightening thunder in the rainy season.
With the win, Aduana Stars have moved to the summit of the Ghana Premier League ladder with 6 points from two games.
