Lawyer Peter Zwennes, President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) says boxing is the number one sport in Ghana, and members of the boxing fraternity have stories to tell as Ghana gears up for the 60th Independence Anniversary.

Speaking at the launch of the Freedom Fight Night at the International Conference Center in Accra, he noted that some journalists keep on labeling boxing as a lesser known sport which is not true.

According to the GBA President Ghana Boxing hit the world and international headlines as far back as the 1950’s when Roy Ankrah was shining in British rings and in the 1970’s when David Kotei Poison won the World Boxing Council(WBC) Featherweight title, then Azumah Nelson won in the 1980’s, even before the Black Stars qualified for the FIFA World Cup in 2006.

He said boxing has brought Ghana more fame and honour than any sport, yet governments have failed to honour promises.

He expressed gratitude to the NDC government for putting up the Bukom Boxing Arena where the Freedom Fight Night comes off as part of the Independence celebration activities.
