Ivory Coast forward Salomon Kalou has announced his retirement from international football after his side’s exit from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations tournament. He featured at 6 Cup of Nations. The defending Champions crashed out from the competition after losing 1-0 to Morocco on Tuesday (24/01/2017).

"I am 31, this is my sixth Africa Cup of Nations. I have been to a final and won another," said the 31-year-old after the defeat to Morocco in Oyem which condemned the Elephants to a group-stage exit. “This time things did not go so well” he added.

He also went on to cite some younger players he tips for the future: “There are young players like (Franck) Kessie, (Wilfried) Zaha... I think they are the future of Ivorian football and I wish them god luck”.

Kalou won the man of the match award but it was Moroccan Rachid Alioui’s spectacular goal that clinched the victory for a Moroccan side coached by Herve Renard, ironically the mastermind of the Ivory Coast's 2015 triumph.

The former Chelsea player made his National team debut back in 2007 and has 89 caps to his credit.
