Former Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor was described as 'unbelievable' after leading his Togo team to a creditable draw against holders Ivory Coast in their Africa Cup of Nations opener.

Adebayor has been without a club since leaving Crystal Palace at the end of last season, but still managed to play almost the entirety of Monday's game.

And afterwards his manager, Claude Le Roy, hailed the veteran striker's physicality, as well as his effort, after claiming he 'came back from nowhere' to be ready to play.

'He was unbelievable physically,' Le Roy said. 'To do what he did today, he put in so much effort.

'He is coming back from nowhere, he takes the ball, gives a lot of solutions. He was not far from creating one opportunity.

'We worked so much together for more than two months, every morning he was with my assistant, who did a huge job with him.

'He is very important for us. He gives us a lot of confidence, and the opponents are always scared of him.'

Togo's next game against Morocco is on Friday, and despite using his talisman for 88 minutes, Le Roy insisted he will be fit for what is now a crucial game, after the north African side were beaten by DR Congo in the group's other game.

'He didn't want to go off,' explained the Togo coach. 'But he will be ready for the next game.'
