Accra, Nov. 30, GNA - The Damang Golf Club would host an Inter-Schools Golf Championship in July 2017 at the spectacular 18-hole golf course in Damang, Western Region.

The competition would enable the students to put into practice what they have been taught over the years.

This was made known after a golf clinic organised by the Ghana Golf Development Board (GGDB) in collaboration with the Damang Golf Club. It was held at the Huni Valley Junior High School in the Western Region on Tuesday.

The event attracted about 20 students, who were taken through the basic rules of golf as well as given the chance to practice with amateur golf sticks.

Captain of Damang Golf Club, Mr Pius Appiah Ayeh said the project by the GGDB was in line with his club's drive to get young talented kids into the sport.

He said his club's vision is to take golf to the communities and also support the less privileged to get interested in the discipline.

'The response has so far been massive and we have had calls from the local schools to teach the kids, so we have developed a module to take care of the schools in our surrounding community,' he said.

He said they have so far visited six schools and hope to visit more schools before the inter-schools championship.

The Director of Golf in Ghana, Mr Steve Wilson, said some professionals players would be visiting the schools in the catchment area to teach the kids to play golf.

'People have the perception that golf is an elite sport and to break that barrier, we have to take golf into the schools with a fun-oriented golf set so that they can have fun whiles learning the sport,' he said.

The team was accompanied by Steven Klah from the Achimota Golf Club and Akwasi Prempeh of Damang Golf Club. They were met on arrival by the headmaster of the school, Mr George Amuzu.
