Kwame Nkrumah as part of his agenda of promoting African unity assembled the champions of the sub regions in Africa in Ghana to compete in the maiden African Club Champions Champions Cup which was re-named the CAF Champions League in 1997.

He achieved this through Ohene Djan, whom he appointed as the director of Sports

Fourteen teams took part in the preliminary round, divided over 4 groups:

North, Centre and East Africa:  winners: Cotton Factory Club (Ethiopia)

West Africa A:                  winners: Stade Malien (Mali)

West Africa B:                  winners: Real Republicans (Ghana)

Central Africa:                 winners: Oryx Douala (Cameroon)

The champions of the four sub-regions converged in Ghana for the semi-finals and final ties

Trivia
The first club to win the competition was Oryx Douala of Cameroon

 The most successful club in the history of the competition is Al Ahly of Egypt with eight title Egyptians clubs have the highest number of titles, a total of fourteen.

Asante Kotoko was the first Ghanaian side to win the African Inter Club competition in 1970

The Porcupine Warriors have lost five finals-the highest in the competition's history
