FEATURE: Ghanas female football pride in the diaspora – Alima Moro
21.10.2016 LISTEN

The name may not sound familiar to many, yet to those who have been in love with female football and for that matter the Black Queens, Alima Sadia Moro is not a strange name. She was a member of the Black Queens team during the era of coach A.K. Edusei during the preparation for the 2012 Women's Afcon in Equatorial Guinea but unfortunately she could not make the cut for the final squad for the tourney.

But in Italy, many are those who keep wondering where such a talented shot stopper evolved from. Very brilliant and agile in post and very aggressive on his back four. She has been commended by many for her organizational qualities and Black Queens coach Yusif Basigi says: 'She communicates very well with her back four and organizes them very well. That is one of her major qualities.'

Even though age is not on her side as Alima is in her early thirties, she is by far the most decorated Ghanaian female footballer in the world. She can currently boast of 15 international awards as a goalkeeper in her playing career.

Alima's industrious career has seen her playing for clubs across Europe; from Germany to Italy, through to Belgium and back to Italy. That alone is an enviable achievement.

She's had stints with Calcio Femminile Vicenza, C.F  Travignano in Italy, SC 13 Bad Neuenahr in Germany and Evas Tienen in Belgium.

The authoritative and industrious shot stopper whose presence in post sends fear down the spine of opponent strikers has not just played in Italy, Germany and Belgium, but has also won the Best Africa Female Footballer in Italy on two occasions; 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons. That's impressive isn't it?

Ali Jarrah as Alima is affectionately referred; she won the 2013/14 Female Football League in Italy with C.F. Travignano as well as the best goalkeeper in the 2014 Torneo International Calcio Tournament.

These and many other awards can be found in the gallery and history books of the talented goalkeeper who is currently in camp with the Black Queens.

Knocking at the doors strongly for a place in the final list of players for the 2016 Women's Afcon, the experienced goalkeeper faces a stiff competition from the young and promising goalkeepers but is convinced that what youthfulness struggles to do, experience does with ease.

Alima has not only made herself proud in the diaspora, but Ghana and Africa in general.
