From A Legend To A Layman, The Fall Of Opoku Nti As An Administrator
A club hero turned a villain in the eyes of many Asante Kotoko supporters is the bizarre story of Samuel Opoku Nti currently the acting General Manager of Asante Kotoko.
The former Ghanaian international took the reins as the General Manager of the club he once played for in 2013 and after that, the story hasn’t been the same.
Responsible for the match winner of the club’s last trophy won in Africa some 33 years ago, the iconic figure has been revered by many including even non Asante Kotoko supporters. To say the least he was just marvelous to watch during his playing days for the Porcupine Warriors.
His love for the club after his retirement made him had ambition to serve for Kotoko in a different capacity which has come to reality but haven’t matched up with his career as a successful footballer.
Four years ago, before his administrative stint with the Kumasi based football club, the mention of his name Opoku alone portrayed a figure of respect because of his legendary status, but today that seems to be wiped out by his feeble administrative skills which has had a terrible effect on the highly respected club.
His critics rates him as the worst administrator the club has had since the formation of the football club 80 years ago. He’s accused by many as bringing the name of the once highly respected football club in Africa into a shame and a cause to mockery with his antiquated decisions.
The Opoku Nti administration is believed by many to have dragged the Brand of Kumasi Asante Kotoko into a ditch. Since his takeover little or no has been added the club’s professional outlook to look bright.
In view of the above, Opoku Nti the ex celebrated footballer of Asante Kotoko today has tasted rough edges of Asante Kotoko fans. It’s now easy for followers of the club to mention his name and associate it with the wrong reasons.
He’s today vilified anyhow because he’s taken a position that is synonymous with affronts. A position that has seen a lot of astute men insulted by the ordinary person on the street. He definitely knew it but has been worse with his sluggish administrative knowledge.
It’s now easy to mention the name Opoku Nti without the correspondence of his legendary feat but his shambolic stint as an administrator of the club he loves much.
He’s gradually turning ordinary in the minds of the demanding Asante Kotoko fans because to them his abysmal performance in the administrative wheels of the club is taking them back.
The reality is, it would have been highly rare for a Kotoko fan to insult Opoku Nti years ago, but with his stint now as a General manager, mere radio callers give it to him through insults.
