The chiefs and the people of Western Region were thrilled, chilled, and above all frozen by great artistry on Monday, March 7, 2016 as the Ghana Beach Soccer Association (GBSA) ushered the sport in the oil region.
As part of the initiation of Beach soccer in the region, the GBSA organized a special inter district competition between Shama, Ahanta West, Nzema East, Elembele, Jomoro, and Sekondi Takoradi.
At the end of the all-action packed finals, the host district (Elembele) lost 1-2 to Jomoro.
The Baku beach soccer arena (fully built with local products) in Elembele witnessed thousands of supporters cheering and chanting for their respective teams from early morning until the end of the finals.
The Minister for Youth and Sports Hon. Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye who was the special guest of honour for the maiden Western Region Independence Day Cup congratulated GBSA for their innovation and also pledged his support for the association.
Apart from the giant trophy at stake, which went to the Jomoro district, there were other awards like the best player and the goal king. Each district had certificates of participation.
