DEFENDER Sammy Kuffour is the latest defender to be targeted by Newcastle as Graeme Souness searches for a top-class stopper. The Bayern Munich defender is high on Souness's list. Kuffour, a 28-year-old Ghana international, will be on a free in the summer and Bayern are weighing up whether to sell him early to make some noney. He has huge experience having played over 60 Champions League games but Newcastle are likely to face competition from clubs around Europe. Toon chairman Freddy Shepherd is said to have already made an enquiry about Kuffour's availability ahead of a possible January bid for the experienced centre-half. Middlesbrough also interested English Premiership club Middlesbrough have contacted Bayern Munich about the availability of long-serving defender Kuffour, reports the respected Kicker Sportmagazin. Kicker reports that Middlesbrough are interested in Ghanaian defender Samuel Kuffour (pictured), though the publication also suggests that former Bayern coach Giovanni Trapattoni is also pursuing Kuffour for his Benfica side.
