Oldies Competition Ends Abruptly In Cape Coast

07.09.2015 LISTEN
By Henry Moses Bekialoge

This year's oldies annual football competition held in Cape Coast ended abruptly with just a few minutes left to end the last game of the day.

The game which started on a very good note between Cape Coast oldies and Liberty oldies was brought to an abrupt end when the Liberty oldies felt the referee was not being fair to them. The Liberty oldies felt they scored a clean goal which was unjustifiably disallowed, couple with a host of other decisions that led to their team being down by two goals to nil (2 : 0).

The Accra men became agitated immediately after the Cape Coasters scored their second goal and started going in with some tackles that could be injurious to their opponents. The game was then brought to an abrupt end when one of the Liberty oldies went in with a tackle that got one of the Cape Coast oldies player injured.

Speaking with the coordinator of the competition, Mr. John Dan Ewusi, who doubles as the a patron of the Cape Coadt oldies, he expressed his disappointment in the way in which the Liberty oldies reacted to the situation at hand.

He said "we have been friends with Liberty oldies for over ten years now, they have never behaved in this manner and so I am very surprised at their behaviour today but we will deal with it ourselves". And when I spoke to Mr. Mawuli Quarshie who was the leader of delegation and the captain of his side, he discounted the fact that the game ended abruptly by saying, " the game did not end abruptly but rather it was the referee who ended the game at the regulated time". He also complained about the abysmal nature in which the referee officiated the game.

The competion began with Cape Coast oldies playing Takoradi oldies first, a game which ended 1: 1 to both teams.

Officiating on the day was very abysmal to say the least so the Takoradi oldies also complained about the officiating when they were playing Cape Coast oldies and it continued unabated until the Liberty oldies found it very unbearable.

All in all, the games were very beautiful in terms of play. And before the match between Cape Coast oldies and the liberty oldies, a beautiful ceremony was performed in memory of the late Alhaji Sly Tetteh who was a member and died 3 years ago after collapsing on the field of play on the same venue .
