African Women's Championship 2004 : Ghana 2-0 Zimbabwe

Ethiopia qualified for the semi-finals of the African Women's Championship by a single goal on Friday after beating hosts South Africa in Pretoria.

The 2-1 win for the Ethiopians, combined with a 2-0 defeat for Zimbabwe in Germiston, meant that Ethiopia won through in second place from Group A on goal difference only.

Both Ethiopia and Zimbabwe finished behind Ghana with four points, but Ethiopia's goal difference was one better than the Zimbabweans.

Both sides were chasing a first-ever place in the semi-finals of the championship.

Strangely, Zimbabwe's bench made no efforts to keep in touch with the score of the South Africa against Ethiopia match in Pretoria.

Had they been aware of the situation they might have been more attacking against a tiring Ghana team near the end of their match.

Ghana's goals both came in the first half through Akua Anokyewaa and African Women's Footballer of the year Adjoa Bayor.

Ethiopia added to the hosts' woes by inflicting a third successive defeat on the hapless South African side.

Tutu Belay opened the scoring early for Ethiopia but South Africa were level through Lydia Monyepoa midway through the first half.

A penalty for Ethiopia, converted by Birtukan Gebrekirstos on the stroke of half-time, proved the winner for the East Africans.
