Upper East beat Eastern in Inter-School's soccer match

Bolgatanga, Sept 8, GNA - The host Region, Upper East on Monday beat Eastern Region 6-5 in the qualifying stage of the Boys Soccer Competition at the 26th Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival currently underway at Bolgatanga.

The two teams drew 2-2 at full time and went in for the penalty kicks and Eastern Region lost two of its shots to make a five-goal aggregate, with the host Region, Upper East missing only one kick to increase its tally to six goals.

Upper East took a commanding lead in the ninth minute through Clement Mba, but five minutes later they failed to convert a penalty to increase their tally.

The Eastern Region lads who marshalled themselves in the latter part of the half, equalized in the 39th minute through Innusah Issah and in the 55th minute Samuel Darko added the second goal for his side. The upper east team took advantage of their home support to step up their attack spiced with beautiful passes thereby holding the ball in their possession for several minutes.

Playing with a disadvantage when their midfielder, Abdulai Latif was sent off in the 57th minute after his first caution offence, the determined Upper East team fetched their second goal through Issahaku Alhassan in the 61st minute to bring the scores to 2-2 all to send their game into penalty shoot-out.

In a related development, Miss Winifred Adoko, who represented the Central Region in the women's 1,500 metre race came first with 4.41 seconds, Miss Christiana Kpeglo from the Volta Region took the second position with a time of 4.44 seconds while Miss Linda Tiwol of the Upper East Region taking the third position with 4.50 seconds.

In the boys 1,500 meters, Godwin Adukpo from the Volta Region came in 4.10 seconds followed by Williams Akula of the Northern Region in 4.12 seconds while Xorla Havor, representing the Greater Accra c,oming third in 4:12.7 seconds.
