Rugby training programme ends at Wa

Wa, Aug. 15, GNA - The Ghana National Rugby Football Association has embarked on a national talent-hunt to form a formidable team to participate in international competitions.

For a starter, Training programmes for rugby instructors have been carried out in the Greater Accra and Upper West Regions as a starter to come out with forming and selecting regional teams.

Mr John Kennedy Koranteng, a member of the training and development department of the association who spoke to the Ghana News Agency after a six-day training programme at Wa said the Region abounds with great rugby talents that needed to be developed.

He said the training programme would be replicated in all the remaining eight regions so as to come out with vibrant regional teams to form the basis of the national team.

Mr. Koranteng said 20 people have been trained in the Upper West Region as the instructors to train people in the Districts on the rudiments of the game.

"We want to get more people interested in rugby football so that the national rugby festival slated for November this year will be a success and enable us get our national team."

Mr. Koranteng said the association decided to begin from the Upper West Region to change the trend where most training programmes normally start from the Southern Regions before they are extend to the Northern Regions after the resources are have been exhausted.

"We shall even form school teams at all levels to make it interesting and acceptable at all levels of the country." The trainer said monitoring strategies would be put in place to ensure the survival of the clubs while funds would be sourced to make the teams and clubs effective.
