Spacefon Buy May 9 Stand

Leading GSM service providers, Spacefon have bought space from the National Sports Council to brand and advertise on the upper terrace of the Accra Sports Stadium May 9 stand.

The one-year renewable contract worth 40 million cedis is however yet to be signed following disapproval from the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA).

Although Spacefon have already commenced branding their allocated space on the stand, work had to be put on hold until after an expected meeting between the NSC boss, Albert Agbozo and the leadership of Ghalca last Friday.

Ghalca is demanding a share of all advertisement benefits the National Sports Council receives from corporate bodies since the clubs are the major stakeholders in ensuring the needed response.

The clarion call sounded a bit louder when the clubs association overturned all billboards at the inner perimeter of the Accra stadium when Liberty played Kotoko in the President's Cup on July 1st.

On his part Fouad Chalabi, the commercial manager of Spacefon refused to be drawn into the furore, arguing that his outfit is only dealing with the National Sports Council who are the caretakers of the stadium.

Mr. Smart Oduro, a marketing executive at the National Sports Council told the Soccer Express that the deal to be signed with Spacefon is in the right direction since the space at the May 9 stand has been untouched since the renovations in 1999.

Following Ghana's successful bid to host CAN 2008, it is not clear if the Spacefon-May 9 stand deal would extend beyond the first year since there would be major reconstruction works at the Accra Stadium for the championship.
