Sports News Technical Director won't spoil Kwesi Appiah's Soup If.........
SEP 1, 2014 LISTEN

The Head Coach is allowed to know who comes in or if the one who comes in does respect him. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has made a U – turn to create a vacancy for technical directorship/advisor for the Black Stars.

The GFA which after the World Cup gave Kwasi Appiah their vote of confidence, some way, somehow decided to fish for a superior technical man to help the Head Coach to excel. What may have caused this sudden decision is alarming! A section of Ghanaians have labeled that action of the GFA as a statement of doubt in respect of Coach Kwasi Appiah's ability to deliver the AFCON 2015 trophy.

But Coach Kwasi Appiah has not performed badly upon assumption of his Head Coach role. He got Ghana to AFCON 2013 Semi – finals and also qualified Ghana in grand style to the World Cup 2014. Ghanaians were told by the GFA officials who travelled to Brazil that, the team's poor performance at the World Cup was borne by the players' attitude. It was not technical, as said by former GFA Chairman and now Ghana technical committee chairman, Ben Koufie.

At Brazil 2014, Ghana played well but unluckily lost to the USA and in the second game against Germany, the eventual winners; it was adjudged one of the best performing matches. It was a game that Ghana nearly won but for Joachim Loew's tactical acumen which helped help his German side to a 2 – 2 with Ghana, the Stars would have bagged all three points.

It was not bad for Kwasi Appiah, but the GFA's decision to bring in a technical director is not a crime. The management can decide which technical direction they want at every given time.  Many coaches in this world have suffered such actions by club administrators. It can at times, create a harmonious environment or conflict.

It is very crucial for a technical director to create an enabling environment for the coaching staff. It is usually appreciable when the incoming director really knows the competence of the incumbent coach. The director must show respect and also share in the philosophy of the Head Coach and help shape it.

The Technical Director role is responsible for developing, implementing and nurturing player and coach development through sound program design and development. In assuming a technical leadership role, the Technical Director provides mentorship to coaches in all programs and fosters good sportsmanship in a safe and fun environment.

The Head Coach of the Black Stars, Kwasi Appiah, still has work in progress and should not be bothered over the turn of events. A technical director at Appiah's door should not be a problem but his soup can be spoilt only if the technical director fails to offer an enabling environment.
